Learning: Plant Treks

Plant Treks

LFM plant treks are an integral part of the learning experience and expand students' understanding of the breadth and complexity of manufacturing by introducing them to LFM partner companies' diverse operations, plant floor workers, key executives, and other LFM alumni employed by those organizations.

In the summer term and during the January two-week national plant trek, students typically see 15 companies. Last summer, students visited local companies Axcelis Technologies, Genzyme Corporation, Raytheon Company, and Novartis AG. During the January 2008 "Grand Tour" the companies visited included:

  • Cisco Systems, Inc. and Flextronics International (Austin, TX)
  • Dell Inc. (Austin, TX)
  • Amazon.com (Fernley, NV)
  • The Boeing Company (Seattle)
  • Harley-Davidson, Inc. (Milwaukee, WI)
  • Honeywell International Inc. (Saint Charles, IL)
  • General Motors Corporation (Detroit, MI)
  • American Axle & Manufacturing, Inc. (Detroit, MI)
