Peter Haughton, LFM '04, died unexpectedly and suddenly at his home in Atlanta, Georgia on January 4, 2006.
A native of Chapel Hill, N.C, Haughton graduated from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in 1989. He was awarded a full merit scholarship to Duke University, and graduated in 1993 with bachelors' degrees in mathematics and public policy. He also earned a B.S. in engineering from North Carolina State University in 1995. After working at IBM and Airspeed in Hillsborough, N.C., Haughton joined the LFM program in 2002, and graduated in 2004 with a master's in business administration from the MIT Sloan School of Management and a master's in science in Mechanical Engineering. In the summer of 2004, he moved to Atlanta to be with his fiancée, Yoon Kim, who he met in Chapel Hill in 1996.
Most recently, Haughton was employed by Winter Properties, a real estate development company committed to revitalizing inner cities through the development of sustainable, environmentally responsible mixed-use properties. At Winter, Haughton oversaw day-to-day project management on development projects.
Haughton enjoyed a variety of hobbies including collecting and restoring antique sports cars and cultivating a lifelong enthusiasm for Legos. He collected Lego sets from all around the world. In addition, he was an accomplished woodworker, designing and building furniture for friends and relatives. Haughton and Kim had many loyal friends, and frequently entertained with cookouts and basketball parties at home. Haughton was a devoted Carolina Tar Heel fan.
In addition to his fiancée, Haughton is survived by his mother, Kristina Haughton of Chapel Hill. He was the son of the late Geoffrey Haughton. He also leaves behind his beloved Labrador retriever, Otis.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2006 at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, 1219 Broad Street, Durham, N.C.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) and MIT's Leaders for Manufacturing program at MIT. To donate to NCSSM, checks should be made out to the "NCSSM Foundation." A designation should be made in the bottom left corner of the check for "The Peter Haughton '89 Memorial Fund." Mail to P.O.
